This page contains all the information and logs of my RaceCar. Seeing as I'm starting this website a year after starting the project I'll be missing a few logs so we'll just go from now. I've named the RaceCar "P31R", which stands for Packy's R31 RaceCar". It also associates with one of my dad's cars, which is a P76. So from now on I'll refer to my R31 Nissan Skyline Project RaceCar as P31R. The oldest stuff will be down the bottom of the page. Well here goes...... Also if you want to ask me questions or suggestions just go to my forum.
16th December 09 - Bought some wheels off ebay for $21....here they are
1st November 09 - Geez its been more than a month since i did anything to P31R. Well I finally have decided to give up on trying to make the paint job smooth as possible like a show car and just get it roughly smooth. I also got around to putting on my racing stickers that i got a while ago, and its made the car look more like a racecar !!! I also tried to find an easier (read... cheaper) way to do my dash, but still will have to do it in aluminium. So here's some pics from the weekend. 1st one is from one side to the other side, showing both name stickers. 2nd pic is of the outside of the car with the neon sticker on the front windscreen and the door stickers, and my name stickers on the back door windows.
27th September 09 - I thought I'd change over the 15inch mags from the R30 to P31R, and damn its made P31R look awesome !! All I need is lots of money to finish my engine and put that back in then suspension mods, then some 17x9.5's and we're racing. If you have some spare cash, just pop it into my bank account.....I won't regret it...ha-ha Here some pics.......
3rd August 09- Just thought I'd put the lights in with a couple of nuts and take some more pics. Also found a few little problem areas with the paint, but hopefully will come out with colour sanding.
1st August 09 - Its been a while saving some spare money for thinners and other stuff to do the painting on P31R, but I've done it. I painted 4 coats on the body and bumpers and trim. I also did 5 coats on the roof as hopefully that will last longer and not be to bad a paintjob. I must say I'm definitely happy with the result even if there are a small number of imperfections and one dint. For the dint and a few other little problems I'll just put stickers over them. All that is left to do is colour sand it all back and polish it to a nice glossy shine. In other words, now the hard work starts. So here's some pics and thank you to my father for helping me get this far.
11th July 09 - Well after two weekends of not doing any work on the car at all. I've finally pulled my finger out and started patching up my rust holes that were cut out about a year ago. Also this weekend is the Townsville Dunlop 400 V8 supercars race, which due to financial situation am not attending. So I've got a few pics below. The first two pics are of the hole I have to fill in. The third pic is of the original drivers door that was on this car, to which I decided is too stuffed to use at a later date so I cut some of the sheet steel from it. The last (fourth) pic is of the panel in and welded in a few spots. I've also wasted about half a can of fish oil in all the rust spots around that area and will give it all a quick lick of paint tomorrow. I'm also thinking of jamming a lot of windscreen sealant in the gaps and normal holes to provide even more protection against any rust in the future. Once I finish this project, if I ever look for another project car, I will be getting one that doesn't have rust anywhere !!! So if you have any questions, hints or comments, just log on to the RaceCrewz.com forum and have your say :)
21st June 09 - This weekend has been pretty boring with Friday and Saturday spent bogging and sanding small imperfections in the front and rear bumpers. Probably took about 10hours work all up in the 2 days. I finally got them primed, but ran out of thinners, so I'm unable to lay any colour for a while. So on Sunday (today) I thought I'd start smoothing the primer on the body and was going good until I found 2 small pin head dimples in the primer, so I filled them in and while sanding the drivers side C pillar I unearthed an outwards dint in the metal. I lightly tapped it back in with one of my body hammers and filled the gap in. I also filled in the small lines my 120grit sand left on the rear guards (was trying to get rid of the black paint my father sprayed there). While reading "competition car electrics" on Sunday arvo I though I'd go and mock up my dash out of cardboard. I'll take it to work and mock up another dash in mdf. Once I get the mdf one right, I'll lay a few layers of fiberglass over it and make it perfect. Which I'm not looking forward to, as I hate fiberglass. Which I should buy some gauges before I do the final fiber glassing. I just realised I haven't got any pics of the front and rear bumpers, so that can wait for another day. But here's a few pics of the whole car, and also the start to my dash. And the last pic is of my bro-in-laws Silvia which is sitting beside my shed as he blew up his engine after 'trying to drift it'. Oh I've also got the silhouette boot (that is standing up against my shed) for sale. Its in good condition with holes for the standard wing. As you can see I'm not using it. I've also trimmed up this page and put the older stuff into the database section !!
14th June 09 - Well what a weekend it has been. I managed to sand back all the problem areas in the body, fill in the little imperfections everywhere and then mask it all off and spray the whole body in primer. And so far its looks pretty damn straight. So in the next few weeks I'll be able to give it all a light sand and then start laying on some colour. Just looking forward into the schedule, I still have a lot to do, and a lot of money to spend. But anyway, here's some pics....again from my N95 8gb phone.
8th June 09 - Forgot to add to this weekends work that when I drained the oil from the gearbox, the drain plug (which has a magnet) was covered in metal shavings and a couple of huge pieces of sheet steel. The gearbox also has sealant around most of the joints, so I'm assuming its been rebuilt at some point, and some how heaps of metal has either magically gotten in there, or we have a few teeth missing. Don't know yet whether I feel like opening the box up or just hope it holds together for a while. I also managed to finish prepping the front guards, after priming then sanding, then more priming, then more sanding. So here's some pics.
Well Friday the 5th June 09 started off with a sore pointy finger after bashing it on he concrete really hard whilst trying to move the car when its on a jack. I do this as the car is a pain in the ass (should be finger, but anyway) trying to push around with the minispool and half a driveway with a drop. So anyway finally got the car in the shed and removed the bonnet all by myself without scratching any of it !! So I unhooked all the hoses and some of the engine loom and the tail shaft and exhaust. Called it a night. Saturday morning (6th June09) started good, unhooking everything else, unbolting engine mounts and gearbox mounts. Then proceeded to remove the engine via winding up the block and tackle and humping the gearbox along. Which I should also say I got the engine and gearbox out in one piece with the gear lever in the gearbox. Oh and I also cut the radiator top support bar out to aid in engine changes now and in the future. So finally got the engine, gearbox out of the car and sat it on the ground and pushed the car outside to give it a degrease. So things to do are prep the engine bay, clean up the wiring harness replace the clips and connectors that are crap due to last owners engine fire. All the while still prepping the body ready for paint (its going to be a long process). And last but not least, its time to start getting the silo engine fixed up and ready to put back in. So here's some pics....
May 2009 - After a few hours or prepping and sanding and more prepping to get rid of all the smallest dints and imperfections my father and I had sprayed the boot and bonnet gloss black acrylic. And after a few more hours of my father colour sanding and polishing the boot and bonnet, they come up damn perfect. In the middle pic you can see the shin and reflection from the palm tree, and also my daughter making funny faces. The far left pic is the latest the car is at the moment.
New dash setup is in. At this point in time it has a scrap piece of aluminium for the switches. Later this will replaced with a full welded and sheeted setup. But the main thing is, I can reach the switches with ease. To the lower left of this pic you can see Dash Version2, it was a bad attempt at using MDF to construct a dash. Which reminds me of what my father said when he saw my attempt....."Timber doesn't belong in cars !!!!! "
Finally started on my dash construction. After putting the seats and harness in, I realised I couldn't reach the kill switch or ignition switches or even the starter button. So that was version1. I also managed to install a full set of good doors back onto the car. But seeing as the original drivers door was stuffed and the last owners had bent it backwards, the new drivers door did not sit right. So after about 3 hours I'd been able to bash the body straight and fit all the doors with good gap clearance and working locks and catches. It was after those 3 or more hours of doing that, that I made the decision that the doors aren't coming off again. I'll paint them on the car. Which, seeing as its a RaceCar, I don't think it will matter.
